In my first year seminar class, Talking About Freedom, we're are put into groups based on seating and our rows. Being put into groups has given me the chance to start new friendships and branch out to meet different people, while also combining all of our talents and strengths to express what this course is really about. Our first group project is a town hall meeting expanding on abolitionists and pro-slavery activists in the 1840s when abolitionism was at a hiatus.
My group members are Joe, Tristan, and Allyson who all have different backgrounds and interests but all bring great things to the table. Joe is 19 and from Raleigh, North Carolina majoring in political science with a minor in philosophy, eager to gain a job either in government or lobbying to make a true difference in our political system. Tristan is 18 and from Minary, Maryland majoring in History hoping to run his own start-up company or even go into venture capitalism. Allyson is 17 and from Syracuse, New York majoring biology and on the pre-med track with hopes of becoming a surgical dermatologist.
Then there's me Taylor Gray and I'm 18 years old majoring in biology with a minor in political science on the pre-med track with hopes of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. As you can see we all have different interests and we'll all end up venturing on our own different paths but this class is giving us the chance to learn from each other.
